Zodiacal Interpretations
   I've always been fascinated by the symbols associated with the astrological signs.  While taking a class in New York City with James Rosenquist, I applied new techniques as well as techniques I'd honed over the years to my final piece, I Feel (Cancer).  From this painting, I decided to make an entire series based on the zodiacal symbols.  The focus of the paintings is
to take the commonplace symbols for each sign and abstract them in the continuum of
historical formalist principles.  I want to create paintings with a double-entente: as an ethereal representation of zodiacal signs and also a formalist abstraction that stands on its own. 
Painted in the oil medium, the works are expressive yet controlled in a fluidity of
shapes and relationships in colors reflective of each sign.
Each zodiacal sign has its own key phrase, lending the title to each piece, for example "I feel"
for Cancer.  These, usually strong and assertive key phrases enhance the organic quality of
the painting and thus takes the image one step farther from the literal zodiacal interpretation -
into a personal and contemporary work of art.
